Remove the handle that was previously used

The door handle isn't only a decoration for your home, but it's also an important safety feature that lets you to lock and unlock your door. However, as time passes the door handle could lose its grip, feel loose, or appear old and worn. This is a good indication that it's time to replace the door handle.

One of the first signs that your door handle requires replacing is if it's becoming difficult to operate. This is a serious issue since you won't be able to lock or unlock the door and put you and your family at risk.

Another reason to replace your door handle is when it's damaged or broken. A broken door handle can be very dangerous, especially if your children or elderly family members are unable to open it, and get trapped inside. Fortunately, it's fairly simple to fix a damaged door handle by replacing the handle that was broken.

The majority of modern door handles are a standard size and therefore are suitable for any door. If you're unsure if the new door handle you're buying will fit, try removing the old one and measuring the holes in its housing. This will allow you to buy the right door handle.

The most straightforward method to take off the handle from your door is to remove it from the door. This is typically done with the screw driver. However certain door handles come with an outer cover plate that hides the mounting screws so you'll need to pry off this to reach the screws beneath. Once you've removed your old handle, take an outline of how the spindle is positioned to ensure that you can make sure it is aligned when you put in the new one.

You can also remove the door handle by depressing the latch mechanism. You can make use of a screwdriver to take off the door handle. But, you'll need to locate the small latch, which is located on the edge cut piece. Once you've removed the latch, you can remove the handle from the strike plate, and then remove the latch off the door's edge.

The Strike Plate

You'll need to replace your latch plate when you replace the handle. It's the plate that holds the hole where the latch of the door hooks when the door is closed. The new handles will have two latch plates that are circular and rectangular plate (see the image above which illustrates the components of a door handle). If your current latch plate has a rectangular shape, switch it over to the round one, so that the latch hooks onto the strike plate in a way that makes the handle more comfortable to operate.

The first step is to unhook the screw that is holding the latch plate. These screws can be quite tight, and will require some force to loosen. It may be helpful to have a second person assist in this area if it is possible.

The latch plate should be removed from the door once the screws have been removed. If it is stuck or doesn't move then use a small nail file to scrape around the edges of the latch plate. This may help free the plate.

Now you can prepare the new strike plate to be installed. Attach the latch plate to the door jamb using the screws that were included with your new handles. Don't over tighten your screws because this could cause damage to the strike plate.

If you're not sure whether the latch plate is in the right position Try closing and opening the door to see whether it latches and closes correctly. If it doesn't then you'll have to adjust the strike plate either up or down, or forward or back until the door shuts and latches properly.

If the door is still jiggling or moving, you may need to enlarge the hole for latching in the strike plate. This is more frequent for older doors, but could also be caused by wear and tear, hinge mortises that are not deep enough or are not sized correctly for the latch, or due to a broken or damaged strike plate that is damaged or broken. If this is the case you can use a metal file instead of a chisel or hammer to adjust the strike plate.

Remove the Latch

The latch is the angled piece of metal that slides between the hole on the inside edge of your door. The latch is pushed forward when you turn the handle. It also hooks in the door frame to ensure that the door is closed. If your door shakes when you close it, changing the latch could be all you need to fix it.

The screws that hold the door latch are difficult to locate, but you can usually insert a screwdriver into a small hole on the trim plate, and then pull the latch off. After you've removed your trim plate, it should be simple to take off the latch as well as the bolts that keep the latch and spindle in place.

If the latch is not easily removed using a paperclip or tool to take it off the handle mechanism. Insert the item into the recessed latch slot and then gently twist or jiggle until you feel handle and latch begin to separate. It is possible to repeat this procedure several times before you can pull the latch out.

Once the old latch is removed and the old latch is removed, you should be able to move the new latch into the slot without any issues. Use your new screws to attach the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it is correctly placed in the slot and aligned with the screw chambers.

Measure the existing backset (the distance between the center of the large hole in the front of the door and the edge) before installing the new handle. Also, make sure that the latch size on the new handle matches the measurement of your existing handle.

If you're replacing the latch or handle or handle, or if the old lock cylinder is damaged, then you'll need an entirely new one. If you're not changing the locks, the new latch should fit in your existing recess, and be compatible with the keys you have currently. Select a latch with rectangular cover plates to match your existing handles.
